Auckland Council Waste Management and Minimisation Special Community Engagement Team contracted Tara in 2013 to complete a Community Residence Action Plan for the Tāmaki Community around the reduction of waste.
This involved a research phase including individual interviews with key community members that held a vested interest in waste reduction, as well as focus groups to enable the opportunity for all of the community to gather and learn about the current Auckland waste and participate in planning for future possible actions. The second phase involved developing a plan which was called Tāmaki WRAP, alongside local community members and the first steps of initiating that plan. This plan was presented back to Auckland Council and Maungakiekie Tāmaki Local Board and fedback the progress regularly to the local Tāmaki community.
The four key projects developed were:
- The Community Garden Network
- Local Champions
- Awareness of Change
- Creativity in Action
Two reports were created at the time:
In 2014, Auckland Council contracted a permanent Tāmaki WRAP Co-ordinator – Karen Clifford, who continued to develop Tāmaki WRAP. The project has now become a Social Enterprise with several initiatives actively growing in the community, their current website can be accessed here.
