Rākau Tautoko was given a wero | challenge to support Maungakiekie Tāmaki local board to build meaningful and productive relationships with the Māori community of Maungakiekie-Tāmaki, in service of:
- Advancing Māori wellbeing
- Promoting Māori success, innovation, and
enterprise - Recognise and provide for Te Tiriti o Waitangi
outcomes - Showcase Māori identity and culture
Our Approach
Initially, we approached local iwi to discuss how Rākau Tautoko could help facilitate local Māori outcomes. The responses were strong and clear that iwi want and need the local board to build direct relationships with local iwi representatives.
Ka huri te ihu o te waka | the bow of our waka then turned towards the future – how could Rākau Tautoko support building local board–rangatahi Māori relationships?
We set out to design a survey to gage:
- Rangatahi awareness of local board responsibilities
- Aspirations for Māori futures in Maungakiekie-Tāmaki
- The best platform for the local board to communicate with the next generation

Build professional service careers while nurturing Māori identities
What would help you achieve your vision for your future? Are there any barriers preventing you from pursuing your aspirations?
Many shared their desire to pursue professional service careers across health, politics, architecture, engineering and entrepreneurial disciplines. There were also many references to the desire to be ‘wealthy and successful’ When asked about barriers, the general responses site a lack of resources and/or opportunities, self-doubt / lack of motivation, a general sense of feeling under supported.
What community services / facilities / activities would you like to see for locals – particularly Māori communities?
- Māori culture – opportunities to learn more about reo, mau rakau, kapa haka, Rongoa Māori, kai, Māori-led mobile healthcare, and connection spaces.
- Local education scholarships / vocational learning
- A focus on regenerating local environments – kia piki te mauri. Rāhui education etc.
