A ‘MacGyver’ type coop

Another busy day.

I visited Roxy for a seedlings install and let her know I’d heard from a good source that she was a smooth mover at a dance party! She laughed and said she’d had a good time. We got her seedlings in and she said hubby was very interested to see this development. She has a bokashi bin she will pull out of the garden and give it another go after we talked about all the advantages of these.

Marie lives next to Jackie and she was waiting for me for our chicken pre visit. She’s watched Jackies with delight and is thrilled to get some of her own. We talked about fencing options and placement. Her neighbour is very helpful and may be able to sort with her. I looked over and his place is kept lovely. I suggested she chat to him and if he is interested in a garden or hens he can apply as well.

We looked at her tiny vege garden and I was able to give her and Jackie some extra seedlings I had from Roxy’s install. These ladies seem to get on and will support each other well.

After lunch, was Aluel’s seedlings install, she was ready and sooo happy. Anna came over to help too and there were a lot of laughs.

Last visit was to *James who was given some chickens in the interim of applying, and made a “macgyver ” type coop, but wanted some guidance around why their chooks might not be laying and would appreciate a visit. A lovely young man met me and the run was perfect. A deep litter base, A tree for perching inside the coop area, a nesting box chickens could only dream of, plenty of specialised layer food and fresh water. There was nothing to fault….I suggested they may either have found a secret place to lay or they are going through a very normal ‘rest period’ called a moult, and will rest for 6-8 weeks as they grow new feathers. I’ve suggested they don’t let out till 2pmish and check the gardens, (which are extensive) for a possible hidden nest. I explained the importance of good food and water but really they are doing everything right. They have four beautiful hens.
