The day started at Sirikit’s ‘Kai korero’. They did an amazing job with several work stations going making things like fruit pies, hummus, pesto, omelettes, risotto and much more! I spoke about my fertiliser workshop next week.
First home visit was Nicola who is super lovely, used lots of reo which was awesome.
Second visit was Tewai whose garden we set up a while ago. She’s having problems with her cat and it was full of up turned forks which seem to be working. She’s been eating from it and very happy. We looked at her bokashi bin she had got from the compost collective but was confused with the instructions. She had put in just a 2-litre container and thought she had to leave it, instead of adding 2 litre containers at a time. We clarified that and I gave her fridge bags.
Third visit was a Pre-visit to Anna, who had large dogs by the sound of them. She came out with baby no 5 on her hip who was a very shy and tiny wee 14 month old. She was thrilled to be getting a garden and talked about trying to garden before but doing no good. She has a good amount of space but I suspect a lot is used by the dog or dogs, so after this one, if successful, we can maybe talk about extending this one by digging up the lawn at the edge. We were able to drop 3 cabbages into her and she was very grateful saying they would not be wasted.
I also attended a gathering where I chatted with lots of people about getting gardens into homes and caught up with Teresa who was sure Lucy was laying but Bella wasn’t. Her reasoning was that while they get 2-3 eggs a day, they were only in Lucy’s nest, so she thought Lucy must be laying them! I explained they will go to a nest of eggs to lay, rather than an empty nest. They don’t have ‘ownership’ of nests, so I was pretty sure both hens were laying and doing well.
A busy week!
