Food Scraps is an Auckland Council Waste Management System that is rolling out throughout Auckland. We are supporting this rollout in three ways:
Community Engagement – Sharing knowledge using the Kumara Vine concept
Creating a kumara vine of champions throughout our communities that engage and teach our whānau how to grow their knowledge and skills to use the food scrap services. Every Auckland resident has the right to the services that Auckland Council offers, however not all residents are provided with the knowledge and skills to utilise all services. Rākau Tautoko works alongside communities to build engagement and empowerment, and we would like to support whānau to understand the food scrap service and how to use it for the benefit of their whānau. We are doing this in our own style and that looks different to other communities. We are empowering local whānau to connect and learn from each other. Tāmaki WRAP has decided to join us in our approach and growing their own kumara vines as well. We are also supporting Tāmaki Wrap with their part in this project.

Stories of Success
We will also be collecting success stories throughout Auckland to encourage the use of the food scrap services. We will connect with Auckland communities and learn about their experiences. These stories will be shared with Auckland Council and through media to encourage ongoing use of the food scrap services.
Manaaki Roopu Māori
We will be connecting and sharing with other roopu Māori throughout Auckland to be able to share our experiences and learnings as well as encourage their own ways of engaging with their communities. This work is to support other roopu Māori that are engaging in the food scrap rollout and their work for this.
